Bringing Brazil to Canada, One Scent at a Time

Imagine a scent that instantly transports you to a lush rainforest, or a silky mousse that wraps your skin in tropical warmth. That’s exactly the kind of sensory journey that Larissa and Esther, founders of Nosso Aroma, set out to create. In a recent episode of Make It Count hosted by Michelle Latocha, the inspiring Brazilian duo shared how their passion for fragrance, culture, and problem-solving led to the birth of their thriving, Canadian-based self-care brand.

Michelle kicked off the episode with a relatable metaphor—like putting on your own oxygen mask before helping others—a fitting opening to a conversation centered on self-care, roots, and creativity.

From Backyard Conversations to Business Vision

The story of Nosso Aroma began at a summer barbecue, surrounded by friends, laughter, and the familiar scents of Brazil. As Esther and Larissa reminisced about the tropical aromas of their homeland, an idea was sparked: why not create products that bottle up the essence of Brazil and bring it to Canadian homes?

Larissa had the hands-on experience and formulation knowledge, while Esther—ever the researcher—dove deep into understanding the logistics, documentation, and sourcing needed to bring their vision to life. Together, their complementary strengths laid the foundation for what would become a brand that is equal parts nostalgic, luxurious, and culturally rich.

From Brazil to Niagara: A Journey of Passion and Purpose

Both women immigrated to Canada from Brazil, bringing with them not just suitcases, but dreams. Larissa arrived three and a half years ago as a student of sales and marketing, eventually launching her business alongside raising a family. Esther made the move in 2016 to pursue a PhD in Applied Health Sciences at Brock University. After living in multiple Canadian cities, she and her husband—along with their Yorkie—settled in Niagara, where their child was born and their business began to thrive.

The Meaning Behind "Nosso Aroma"

"Nosso Aroma" translates to “Our Scent” in Portuguese, a name that beautifully encapsulates the heart of the business. “We wanted something in Portuguese that wouldn’t be too hard to pronounce in English,” said Larissa, adding that the name reflects their intention to share a piece of themselves—and Brazil—with every customer. “It’s a piece of us coming home with them.”

Crafting Authentic Brazilian Scents

The signature scents of Nosso Aroma are not just imported ideas—they are deeply tied to Brazilian culture and nature. From the cherry-like Pitanga (Brazilian cherry) to earthy Amazonian notes, the founders blend rare native ingredients with more familiar ones like lavender, lime, and orange to create unique fragrances that are both exotic and comforting.

Their Tropical Bloom and Amazonian Essence collections are standout examples, merging the unexpected with the beloved in ways that reflect both their heritage and their new home.

A Product Experience Like No Other

One of Nosso Aroma’s most beloved products is their shower mousse—a whipped, creamy alternative to traditional soap that glides onto the skin like a rich lotion. Michelle, a delighted customer herself, praised how the mousse not only transforms a mundane shower into a rainforest escape, but also lasts longer and feels more nourishing than standard soaps.

The product line doesn’t stop there. From candles and bath bombs to shower steamers and bath salts, each item is handcrafted with intention. “We could have just made a bar soap,” said Esther. “But we wanted to solve the problem for ourselves and for others. Liquid soap pumps are messy, bar soaps are inconvenient—so we created something better.”

Even their seasonal collections, like mini Christmas-themed soaps and décor kits, reflect their dedication to creativity and innovation.

The Art of Handmade Luxury

Every item from Nosso Aroma is handmade, using premium, often imported ingredients like babaçu coconut oil—a natural Brazilian oil known for its moisturizing properties. Their Amazonian collection features lime extract for deep cleansing, balanced with the soothing effects of babaçu. These thoughtful formulations set Nosso Aroma apart from mass-produced alternatives. “We use these products on our own daughters,” said Esther, a simple but powerful testament to their safety and quality.

Michelle pointed out how the clean, readable ingredient lists make a real difference in today’s market, where many store-bought products come with unpronounceable chemicals. “What you put on your skin matters,” she emphasized.

Fan Favorites and Signature Scents

When asked about their bestsellers, Larissa and Esther didn’t hesitate—Tropical Bloom is the crowd favorite, with Pitanga as the standout scent. “It’s my baby,” Esther confessed. “My passion for Brazilian cherry is endless.” Larissa, on the other hand, favors the Belmeir collection—a line specifically created with mothers in mind.

The Belmeir collection features intricately shaped products like flower-molded candles, bath bombs, and salts. “It’s an art piece,” said Michelle, visibly impressed. And indeed, the science behind candle-making—timing, temperature, wax type—is something the founders have clearly mastered.
